If you are the proud owner of a hot tub then you already know how relaxing the experience can be. But as the weather cools down and the leaves are falling, many people are hesitant to spend time in their hot tubs. In my opinion, autumn is the ideal season for hot tubbing, and here’s why.
It’s Not Too Cold
When the weather gets extremely cold, the heating mechanism of a hot tub may struggle to keep the water at the appropriate temperature. Even the best portable hot tub or an inground (fixed) hot tub is only guaranteed to work when the ambient temperature is at 40ºF, and winter temperatures in many countries drop far below that limit. Don’t forget to add the wind chill factor, because unless you’re indoors, the wind will cool down the temperature to some degree. So, autumn is when the heating mechanism can still handle the ambient temperature and maintain the temperature of the hot tub.
It’s Not Too Hot
During the summer, very few people think of hot tubbing at all. In fact, most people would rather jump into a swimming pool where they cool off instead of heating up in a hot tub. Relaxing as it may be, hot tubbing is not particularly suited for the summer months. Note that some people still get into the hot tub instead of a swimming pool, with the temperatures dialled down or the heating mechanism turned off entirely.
A Contrast In Temperatures
Contrasting sensations are highly enjoyable. Sweet and sour food, contrasting colors, and even feeling hot and cold. Traditionally, hot springs are usually found in very cold areas. Hot tubs are a man-made version of a hot spring, so it makes sense that people should try to enjoy them when the weather is cold. Autumn and winter are great for hot tubbing due to the palpable contrast in temperatures, between the hot water and cold weather. I believe that autumn is more suitable than winter because the contrast is not too harsh, but it is rather balanced instead. Just make sure you aren’t spending too much time out of the water in the cold weather and exposed while you’re wet—otherwise you would risk getting hypothermia.
Tips For Running The Hot Tub In Autumn
While the manufacturer still guarantees that the heating mechanism will work, that doesn’t mean that energy costs during autumn won’t increase as the heating system works against the weather to keep the water warm. Make sure to add insulation below your hot tub and around the heating unit to reduce the impact of the weather on the hot tub’s functioning.
Final Thoughts
No matter the weather you choose to get into a hot tub, the experience is bound to be relaxing. Most people prefer to use the spa when the temperature drops, and autumn is the perfect weather for this because it isn’t too harsh. You don’t need to worry about rushing inside after your hot tub session, or taking extreme measures to make sure the heating system is up and running.
