One of the best yet simplest ways to transform your normal look into a different character is to put on a wig. Wearing costume wigs alters your looks in an instant without permanently changing your natural hair. It can also add more grit to your personality and let you enjoy an updated hairdo anytime you want.

If you invest in several sets of wigs for different occasions, you need to ensure that you take care of them properly to put them on without any problems. These synthetic clusters of hair get tangled if you neglect them. So, here are several steps to ensure that every strand of your wigs will remain in its tip-top shape all the time.

Step #1: Brush the Wigs

Your costume wigs need a thorough brushing before you start cleaning them. You may use a paddle brush made with sturdy plastic bristles with a plastic pad to reduce the static on the strands.

You must brush the wigs starting from the bottom to the top using downward strokes as a general rule. It is also recommended to begin with the ends of the wigs and brush every inch until all areas are smooth. Then you can move in the upper portion of the wigs to complete the brushing process. However, you need to avoid pulling the wig too hard when it snags to prevent it from losing strands.

Step #2: Use Multipurpose Spray

Household cleaning products can also help clean your wigs. For example, you may use surface sprays to remove dust and add more lustre to your wigs every time you brush.

Some of the active ingredients of these sprays offer a protective layer that lets the synthetic fibres of the wig remain smooth. It also helps in detangling every strand with every brush stroke. You must only keep in mind to avoid dousing the wigs with the product too much to prevent excessive moisture.

Step #3: Use Cold Water

Once you brush off the knots, you can begin washing your wigs to keep them clean. You must fill your sink or washtub with cold water to begin the process.

You must never choose to use hot water when cleaning your wigs. The heat from the water may cause the colours to fade. In addition, cold water can help keep the hair strands from forming knits as they rub in the water.

Step #4: Wash Using the Right Cleaning Materials

Once you fill the tub with cold water, you must add a cap of fabric softener to remove the dirt and grime in your wigs. Meanwhile, fabric softeners are used in the laundry to keep clothes soft. It also helps lessen the friction between the cloth fibres to protect the clothes from rapid wear and tear.

The same principle is applied to your wigs if you use fabric softeners for cleaning. It is also a better cleaning material to use than soap or shampoo since it is less sudsy. As a result, it will rinse faster.

Step #5: Rinse Completely

Once all the dust and dirt are removed using your favourite fabric softener, you need to rinse it thoroughly. But you need to be careful when rinsing the delicate item to avoid uprooting the strands.

So, to get rid of all the suds, you must swirl the wig through the cold water carefully. Rubbing or scrubbing the items is not recommended since it will cause bad tangles in the strands. You must also let the wig soak for at least 20 minutes to remove all the foam.  And after rinsing the wig, you must dry it out completely before keeping it in dust-free storage.

Taking care of your wigs will let you enjoy wearing them for a long time. And if you follow all these steps, you can be assured that you can have fun with your wigs whenever you want them.
