As time goes by and technology continues to advance, gadgets are infiltrating our day-to-day lives more and more. One particularly pivotal gadget is the smart watch. Already capable of monitoring our heart rate, counting our steps, tracking calorie burn, recording our sleep, receiving phone notifications and much more, we can only imagine what the future holds for this innovative piece of wearable tech.
And talking of imagination, there are few people who share the free-minded creativity that children possess. So who better to ask for a visualisation of the potential future than this very generation? To gain a little insight into kids’ attitudes towards technology and to predict what future smart watches could look like in years to come, Currys PC World enlisted five talented young artists to illustrate their vision of the next generation of smart watches. Parents had their say on the subject too, sharing their views on children owning wearable technology.
The most notable aspect of the kids’ visions is that among the five designs, there was an overwhelming theme of wellbeing, safety and sustainability – some very noble causes indeed.
Some of the key features included:
- Mood detector that triggers support notifications to help with mental health
- Eco friendly solar-powered charging
- Digital personal trainer with guided workouts
- Plastic scanner that detects what can or can’t be recycled
- Disease detector that recognises notable changes in body temperature and other factors that indicate illness
Could this indicate that these smart watches could enrich our lives in ways beyond the superficial? With an increased awareness of climate change and sustainability across the globe, consumers are seeking more eco-friendly options, meaning solar-powered charging and pro-recycling features would likely be a big hit. The same goes for taking a more pro-active stance to maintaining good mental health, for which the mood detector could certainly assist. Not to mention that we’re always seeking inspiration to get more active.

When it comes to children owning a smart watch there are numerous benefits, including encouragement to lead a healthy lifestyle and even improved safety, as parents could one day use these gadgets to track their children’s whereabouts – a feature mums and dads involved in the project were not averse to. Among the parents surveyed, 54% think that wearable technology could be good for their child’s welfare. Dads were more convinced on the matter than mums, with 64% of men saying they are pro-smart watch, compared to just 54% of female parents.
Of course, with the pros come the cons, and some would argue that children owning smart watches could lead to unhealthy relationships with technology. Not only that, but 6% of the surveyed parents think that being able to track their child would cause them more worry than peace of mind.
Here’s a summary of each of the smart watch designs and the unique features that each of them possesses:
