What Is Persuasion?

If you are just a Jane Austen movie fan and have never touched the books, then here is a simplified plot of Austen’s last book.

Yes, Persuasion of Jane Austen’s last novel, and over the years, it has gathered some polarizing comments. Some loved it, and some hated it because of the lack of conversational tone and more of a story narration style.

This is how the plot goes…

Persuasion is a story of second chances and slow burns of old lovers. The story begins with our heroine Anne Elliot who is equally caring and witty. Almost reaching her middle ages, Anne is almost considered a spinster by her society, but the fate of love had something planned for her.

She had beauty for anyone to notice her, but her decision to choose a loveless life has to do a lot with what happened in her life eight years ago. Almost a decade ago, she met Captain Wentworth and fell madly in love with each other. However, due to his lack of wealth and status, she was persuaded not to marry him.

Captain Wentworth left immediately, but what happens when he returns after the Napoleonic war when he has status in the navy and new money? Anne immediately finds her old feelings flooding to the surface, and the effort to keep it subtle and not converse with the captain overshadows all her wits and confidence.

What Went Wrong With The Movie?

‘I am half agony and half hope.’

However, according to critics, this movie was only able to deliver ‘agony’ and no ‘hope.’ Why so?

To begin with, it is the entire breaking of the third wall for our main character Anne Elliot, played by Dakota Jhonson. Yes, this method is not being used by many filmmakers after the grand success of ‘Fleabag’ by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Although the creators of Persuasion have tried to add a flair of modern cinematography in this classic Regency period drama, Anne Elliot’s use of ultra-modern 21st-century buzzwords did manage to ‘kill the buzz.’

Because we are sure no matter how witty and bookish of a character, she is. In the regency era, she might not be wary of words like ‘total narcissist’ and ‘playlist’ (like total GenZ lingo).

Jane Austen was that one Regency writer who always made her heroines out of the world. Suppose we talk about our headstrong Elizabeth Bennet or our colorful and clever Emma Woodhouse, or witty Anne herself. However, throughout the movie, Jhonson is seen acting totally chaotic. Anne Eliot might have been in agony, but she was not chaotic and unladylike (according to the standards 200 years ago).

Critics have pointed out the heavy resemblance of very modern standards adorned corsets. All in all, the character didn’t seem like an 1800 modern woman but rather a 21st-century modern woman.

What To Look Forward To

The cinematography and acting will not have many complaints. Plus, the costume department also did a good job. Persuasion is not a contemporary modernization of Austen like ‘Clueless.’

The story almost remains the same, and so do the year and characters.

However, Johnson is often underappreciated as a comedy actress, and you will understand why after watching Persuasion. Does give up hope that in the future, we will see her in other comic-driven movies, but maybe not a hyper modernization of Jane Austen.
