Software engineering is a highly competitive industry, especially in India, where Varun Shah was born and raised. In 2022, the IT industry contributed 7.4% of the country’s GDP. With half a million IT graduates each year, the market is definitely quite saturated, so it is hard to stand out as a leader in software engineering. However, Varun Shah stood out due to his dedicated hard work that has changed the game for multinationals.
Varun is an experienced and dynamic engineering leader with over 15 years of experience in cybersecurity, healthcare, and information technology consulting. Working with teams worldwide, he has demonstrated a track record of leading successful digital transformation programs for various Fortune 500 organizations. His strategic leadership and certified skills have helped companies achieve their business and growth objectives using technology as a catalyst. He is passionate about creating remarkable IT solutions and strategies that align seamlessly with business goals.
Varun Shah received his Bachelor of Information Technology Engineering degree with distinction from India’s renowned L.D. College of Engineering. He was hired for his first job while still in college, allowing him to begin his career ascent up the corporate ladder as a software engineer. Then, he worked as a lead engineer for several years. As a result of this exposure, he has gained extensive knowledge of enterprise IT architectures and best practices.
Shah’s love for computers, tech, and software is never wavering. He has spent years working with teams worldwide to build quality software foundations that have boosted every project and company he has worked for.
A Humble Journey to Excellence
Varun Shah’s career jumped when he got a job at a company in India called Tata Consulting Services (TCS), the second-most valuable IT services company. Varun joined as a full-stack software engineer and quickly rose to lead a team of engineers due to his critical role in software design and architecture.
He led the IWDMS (Integrated Workflow and Document Management System), a one-stop solution for creating a database for various government departments and secretariat and a file disposal and approval procedure. He also created the IFMS (Integrated Finance Management System), which integrates the major functions of the Finance Department, Directorate of Accounts and Treasuries, Sub Treasury, Directorate of Pension and Provident Fund, and offices spread across the state.
Varun’s contribution to these projects helped the state government reduce 80% of approvals’ laborious manual work and transfer cases to different departments. The greater efficiency helped increase effective function and improved the delivery of services to citizens by 75%.
Due to its success and the similar needs of other government agencies, this ingenious solution for automation was even expanded to different nations worldwide, like the UK, Kenya, Australia, Uganda, and other government agencies.
Cignex then hired Varun Shah as a technical lead, where he handled several UK and US portal projects for multinationals like Posadas, Sesame Street, Yell.com, EA Sports, CalWorks Information Network (CalWIN), Keenan Insurance, TravelPort, Toyota, and more.
Varun moved to the United States to lead the Toyota Owners Portal project, which was very critical for Toyota -the #1 car company in the world, to digitize their car servicing and user-customized features. To implement Toyota’s vision, he led software engineering teams, including software engineers, data engineers, and quality assurance engineers. After the launch, around 40 million Toyota consumers around the US used this portal, and Toyota reduced 60% of customer care calls by introducing digital car servicing and customized car resource features. This is where Shah developed his expertise as a leader, learning the difference between a mere manager and someone who could drive the team to better heights.
